I adore these sculptural booklamps by Alanna. I think a pair framing our bed, one over each night stand, would look great. I’ve never cared much for unshaded bulbs, though. While they conjure a certain honest industrial charm, the glare is a pain when it comes down to it. And if we’ve switched our energy-hogging bulbs to compact fluorescents, would that really look decent with these gorgeous book lamps? Doubtful. Yet I do admire how Alanna has carefully selected titles by theme for her upcycled book lamps – paring “Gulliver’s Travels” with “Happy Return” for instance, or making trio of stacked forms from the pages of ‘Little Orphan Annie’, “Jo’s Boys” and “The Brownie Scouts in the Circus”. Clever girl.
And we’ve all taken note I’m sure of the library necklace on Etsy by The Black Spot Books. Composed of miniature handcrafted leather journals, this lovely necklace even made its way to Anthropologie. Amazing!

Custom Wedding Jewelry for Niki M.

I added a new slide to the custom gallery on likeafoxjewelry.com, and it was too beautiful not to post here as well. In my first consultation with Niki about a custom necklace for her wedding, she envisioned a long drape of black beads. Which is the exact opposite of what she got! Considering the the beaded vintage-inspired gown and the sparkling Bando headband that she chose, we decided to up the glamor quotient. The results were nothing short of breathtaking.

Niki’s custom necklace has a vintage rhinestone brooch, faceted glass beads, and reclaimed vintage chain. Niki and Aaron’s spectacular rustic-glamor wedding was captured by Tina Sargeant Photography.

Crafty Costumes : Clue Characters

Even on vacation there’s time for craftiness. Especially if it involves my most favorite of holidays – Halloween. For the Halloween bash at 3rd ward in Brooklyn, we got busy with some cardboard and silver paint to make the wrench, lead pipe, dagger, candlestick and pistol for our Clue boardgame group costume. Here are some snaps from the party photo booth:
For Halloween itself, some of us decided on a last minute Bed Buds Infestation. Roaming the streets of New York and dining a at fine establishment while covered in plastic bugs was hilarious!

Artpool Trashion Party

Artpool Gallery’s Tra’shion Fashion show last month was even better than I could have imagined. For the first time I got myself over to St. Pete for one of Artpool’s outrageous monthly art parties, and it was well worth the drive. The call for fashion made from trash and recycled materials is just the sort of thing I adore. Marina Williams and her designer pals went all out with their trashion creations. Very impressive. I put together a little somethin’ special to wear myself, turning colorful net produce bags into a purse, bracelets and something akin to summer leg warmers.

For a belt, I wove two bright yellow handles salvaged from a double-pack of apple juice bottles together using rubber bands. And for jewelry? A radiant necklace and earrings of faux diamonds crafted from clear plastic egg cartons. Not too shabby for a last minute costume! Here are three of my favorite designs from the show: the gothic dress made from film, the sci-fi fantasy girl, and the gold dress made from plastic bags and balloons. Four Star Necklace

Feeling inspired on Monday, I finished some new necklaces. I’ve taken a big break from jewelry this year, but now it’s time to stockpile for fall shows. I scooped up some beautiful stones at Yia Yia’s big farewell sale last week. While I use mostly vintage and recycled materials, I find the combination of vintage metals and rustic cut stones irresistable. It’s sad news that Kristine’s shop is leaving Lakeland for Sarasota. She will be dearly missed!
